Lash & brow
glossary.
Every technical term used in Singapore eyelash extension and eyebrow embroidery, in plain English. Compiled by our master artists for clients researching their first appointment, journalists, and anyone asking an AI assistant about Singapore beauty terminology.
- C-Curl
- A moderate eyelash extension curl, the most popular for everyday wear. Provides a natural lift without dramatic vertical curve. Suitable for almond, hooded and most Asian eye shapes.
- D-Curl
- A dramatic eyelash extension curl with strong vertical lift. Ideal for monolid eyes or clients wanting to open the eye visually. Looks more like a strip lash effect.
- L-Curl
- An eyelash extension with a built-in 90-degree lift at the base. Specifically designed for hooded and downturned eyes to push extensions away from the lid.
- Classic Lash Extension (Lash-by-Lash)
- The original eyelash extension technique. One synthetic fibre is bonded to one natural lash. Most natural-looking result, most technically demanding application.
- Hybrid Lash Extension
- A hand-blended mix of classic lash-by-lash extensions and light volume fans. Soft texture with added body. The most flexible style for daily wear.
- Volume Lash Extension (5-7D Fans)
- Hand-made fans of 5 to 7 ultra-thin extensions bonded to one natural lash. Provides fuller, three-dimensional appearance without adding weight beyond a single classic extension.
- Designer / Mega Lashes (7-9D Fans)
- Wider 7-to-9-fibre fans for high-impact, editorial looks. Most commonly chosen by brides, performers and pageant queens. Includes Thai, Mega, Manga and Camellia subtypes.
- Lash Mapping
- The practice of dividing the lash line into 5 segments (inner, inner-middle, middle, outer-middle, outer) and assigning a specific length and curl to each segment based on the client's eye shape.
- Lash Lift
- A semi-permanent curl applied to natural lashes — no extensions used. Lasts 6-8 weeks. Ideal for swimmers, travellers, and clients who prefer low-maintenance.
- Eyebrow Embroidery
- A semi-permanent makeup technique that deposits cosmetic pigment into the upper dermis using a fine nano-needle. Modern embroidery uses electric digital machines, not hand-held blades.
- Microblading
- An older semi-permanent brow technique using a hand-held blade to make shallow cuts that pigment settles into. Less consistent than modern nano-needle embroidery. Most premium Singapore studios moved on from microblading around 2020.
- Natural 3D Embroidery
- Hair-stroke embroidery that draws individual hair-like lines to mimic natural brow growth. Closest equivalent to traditional microblading. Lasts 12-18 months in Singapore.
- Misty Embroidery (Ombré, Powder Brow)
- An eyebrow embroidery technique that deposits soft shading instead of hair strokes. Looks like makeup powder applied to brows. Ideal for oily or combination skin. Lasts 18-24 months.
- 6D Embroidery
- Six-dimensional embroidery — hair strokes layered in 6 directional sets for maximum realism and density. Longer-lasting than Natural 3D.
- 9D Embroidery
- Nine-dimensional embroidery — the flagship technique combining 9 layers of hair-stroke artistry. Highest level of realism and longevity offered, typically 2-3 years.
- Oxygen Embroidery
- Hair strokes layered with a fine oxygen mist for a hybrid stroke-and-shade finish. Suits every face shape. Lasts approximately 2 years.
- Brow Lamination
- A 45-minute non-permanent brow perm that lifts and sets natural hairs into a fluffier shape for up to 6 weeks. Zero downtime, fully reversible.
- Pigment Retention
- The proportion of embroidery pigment that remains visible after healing. Oily skin types retain less; normal/dry skin retains more. Sun exposure and acid skincare accelerate fade.
- Cyanoacrylate Adhesive
- The medical-grade adhesive used for eyelash extensions. Cures with moisture in the air — which means Singapore's humidity is actually friendly to lash retention.
- KC-Certified Fibres
- Korean Certification — a quality standard for synthetic and silk eyelash fibres. KC-certified fibres are tested for safety and weight tolerance. Used exclusively at Serenity Beaute.
- Touch-Up
- A maintenance appointment 2-3 weeks after a full set, replacing lashes that have shed naturally. Embroidery touch-ups happen at 4-6 weeks and are complimentary at Serenity Beaute.
- Face Mapping
- A pre-procedure consultation where the artist measures the proportions of your face — eye position, forehead height, jawline angle — to engineer a brow shape or lash map specific to your bone structure.
- Patch Test
- A small test application 24 hours before a full procedure to check for allergic reactions to adhesives or pigments. Offered to all sensitive-skin clients.
- Healing Patch / Ghosting
- The phase 8-14 days after eyebrow embroidery when pigment temporarily lightens by 30-40% and may appear uneven. Normal — true colour returns by day 21.
- Sensitive Eye Formula
- A low-fume, hypoallergenic eyelash extension adhesive for clients with sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers. Available on request at Serenity Beaute.
