Extension shape isn't one-size-fits-all

The most common mistake in lash extensions isn't the length or the volume — it's the shape. An extension shape that fights your eye geometry will always look slightly off, no matter how skilled the application. One that works with your features? That looks like you, only more.

At Serenity Beauté, every appointment begins with a 15-minute face-mapping consultation. We study your eye shape, lid space, orbital bone, and even your brow arch before a single lash is placed. Extension shape is chosen for your face — not pulled from a trend board.

What 'extension shape' actually means

When professionals talk about extension shape, they're referring to two layered decisions:

  • Curl profile — the curvature of each individual fibre (J, B, C, CC, D, L, M curls, among others)
  • Length mapping — how lengths are distributed across the lash line to create a specific silhouette

These two choices combine to produce a final shape: cat eye, doll eye, natural, open-eye, squirrel, and more. Change the curl or the mapping, and you change the entire result. This is why face-mapping matters. A CC curl placed at the outer corner reads differently on a monolid than on a deep-set eye.

The most common extension shapes — and who they suit

Natural / classic shape

Lengths graduate gently from inner to outer corner, mirroring the eye's own lash line. The curl is subtle — typically a B or soft C. This shape suits almost every eye type and is the foundation of what we mean when we say 'the most natural eyelash extension you can get.' It enhances without announcing itself.

Best for: first-time guests, everyday wear, corporate environments, brides who want to look like themselves in photos.

Cat eye shape

Shorter at the inner corner, progressively longer toward the outer tail. Creates the illusion of a lifted, elongated eye. The effect is subtle on almond eyes; more dramatic on round eyes where the contrast is sharper.

Best for: almond or slightly downturned eyes. Used carefully, it also adds perceived lift to hooded lids.

Doll eye shape

Peak length sits at the centre of the lash line, tapering toward both corners. This opens the eye vertically — ideal for creating the appearance of wider, rounder eyes.

Best for: narrow or almond-shaped eyes that benefit from more vertical presence. Can feel overpowering on already-round eyes.

Open-eye / squirrel shape

A softer hybrid — peak length sits slightly past centre toward the outer third, then tapers gently. It combines the lifted quality of a cat eye with the openness of a doll eye. One of the most requested styles for brides and performers.

Best for: almond and monolid eye types; pageant contestants who need a shape that photographs beautifully from every angle.

Textured / wispy shape

Mixes lengths deliberately within each section to create a feathered, dimensional look. Works across multiple curl types. This is a look that requires precise lash mapping — randomness with intention.

Best for: guests who want something editorial but wearable; performers and stage work.

How curl type changes the shape

Two sets of lashes with identical length mapping can look completely different depending on curl selection. A quick reference:

Curl Character Works well for
B / J Very natural, subtle lift Naturally straight lashes, everyday looks
C The classic — moderate curve Most eye types; versatile baseline
CC Between C and D; popular in Korea Monolids, hooded eyes
D Dramatic upward curl Deep-set or downturned eyes needing lift
L / M Flat base, sharp curve Monolids; maximises curl without excessive length

At Serenity Beauté, our artists use KC-certified Korean and Japanese ultra-fine fibers — materials chosen specifically because their curl holds true over time with hypoallergenic adhesives. Always.

Why lash mapping determines the final shape

Even the perfect curl won't save a poorly mapped set. Lash mapping is the blueprint — dividing the eye into zones (typically five to seven sections) and assigning specific lengths and curls to each. A skilled artist adjusts the map based on:

  • Eye symmetry — most faces are asymmetrical; good mapping compensates
  • Lid space — deep-set eyes need different treatment than protruding eyes
  • Lash direction — natural lashes that grow downward need a stronger curl to lift
  • Lifestyle and wear — a pageant competitor needs a different map than someone wanting a no-makeup look

This is precisely why our face-mapping consultation exists at the start of every appointment. We never up-sell — only right-size.

Common extension shape mistakes to avoid

  • Copying a shape from a photo without considering eye shape. A doll eye that looks ethereal on one face can make close-set eyes appear smaller.
  • Ignoring natural lash direction. Placing a curled extension on a downward-growing natural lash creates tension and shortens retention.
  • Over-lengthening the outer corner on hooded eyes. It disappears under the fold. A CC or D curl with moderate length typically performs better.
  • Choosing dramatic volume purely for the wow factor. Volume amplifies shape — if the shape is wrong, more fibres make it more wrong.
